How did it feel to be named BASCOL’s 2025 Employee of the Year?
It was an unexpected surprise. I was honored to be chosen, and it was a very humbling experience. I work with a bunch of great people whom I was expecting to be picked.
What drew you to a career in education, particularly in before-and after-school care?
Having three sons of my own involved in youth sports, I have been coaching and already working with kids for many years. After having been laid off from the New York State Thruway as a toll collector, I was advised that BASCOL was hiring, and it felt like the right fit.
What is a typical day like as the site director at Soule Road Elementary School?
As site director of Soule Road Elementary I typically start my afternoon arriving at 2:30 p.m. and getting set up for the day. This involves setting out toys, games, and arts and crafts activities. The kids arrive around 3:40 p.m., where they are greeted, followed by a meeting to set the expectations for the day. Then they are offered a snack for the afternoon, followed by a craft. Depending on the weather, the kids will then have gym time or outdoor play. Finally, the kids will just hang out and play games until they are picked up by their parents.
What is your favorite part of your role?
The interactions with the kids, seeing their smiles, and watching them grow throughout the year!
