Celebrate at Home: Simple Earth Day Ideas for Families

Earth Day doesn’t have to mean a big event or a long drive. Some of the most meaningful ways to celebrate happen right at home or in your own neighborhood.

Get outside. Take a walk or hike at a local nature center, park, or trail. Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville is a perennial favorite, with miles of trails and seasonal wildlife — and spring is a wonderful time to visit. Green Lakes State Park also offers walking trails where you can take in views of its two glacial lakes — known for their bright blue-green color.

Pick up litter in your neighborhood. Grab a bag and spend 20 minutes cleaning up your block, a local park, or a trail. Kids of all ages can get involved, and it’s a simple, tangible way to make an impact.

Plant something. Whether it’s a small herb garden on the windowsill or a few flowers in the backyard, planting something together is a hands-on way to connect with the earth.

Talk about it. Earth Day is a great conversation starter. Ask your kids what they know about the environment, what they love about nature, and what they’d like to help protect. You might be surprised by what they have to say. For more on how to approach these conversations, check out our article on Earth Day Talking Points: How to Teach Kids About Environmental Issues.
